I saw a recent article in Quirks titled, “Stop Taking Orders” and it got me thinking, when is it OK to say yes to clients and stakeholders, and when should you say no?
I think it's OK to say yes when budgets change or objective shift. You have to be flexible and that's absolutely a part of the discussion and negotiation.
But it's also OK to say no in these types of scenarios. For instance, when it looks like a research budget is going to be…useful. It doesn't matter if the budget is large or small. I've seen large projects that could have been more efficient if they had been broken into smaller groups, and I've seen some small projects that, while they were affordable, really just didn't make sense to run at all.
It's also OK if you disagree with the methodology. If it won't deliver on the stated objective. In this case, nobody's gonna be happy with the results and it's really a waste of time and budget. So, in the end, let's try to avoid the order taker. Roll outright and work towards discussions that really deliver good research overall.
